Major changes have been made to the rules of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) transactions in India in April 2025. These rules are implemented by the NPCI to create an environment of security, transparency and convenience for the consumer in the digital payment scenario. Purpose Of New Rules
The new UPI rules are engaged primarily with user experience and fraud prevention. The NPCI has issued new guidelines for mobile number-based UPI IDs, which have come into effect since April 1, 2025. Banks and UPI applications shall regularly update their databases to expunge UPI IDs associated with mobile numbers that are inactive or reassigned.
Mobile Number Verification
Under the above rules, if the mobile number of a user remained inactive for a long period, the UPI ID associated with the mobile number would stand deactivated. This is a step toward mitigating cyber fraud and technical problems. Users are advised to keep the bank-linked mobile number in service and updated.
Termination Of “Collect Payments” Facility
NPCI is in the process of phasing out the “Collect Payments” feature in UPI. This has been brought about to counter further incidents of fraud. Besides, as a matter of convenience, UPI Apps have been allowed to locally solve UPI numbers, thus enhancing the transaction experience in face of system delays.
Weekly Data Update
Banks and UPI apps have been directed to review and update every week the list of inactive numbers. This exercise will assist users in easily and uninterruptedly enjoying UPI services, which automatically unlists a user’s number after a period of inactivity.
