The Reserve Bank of India is revising ATM charges to compensate banks with the increasing cost involved in operating and maintaining the ATM network. This is also a step toward the overall cause of encouraging digital banking, so that customers use digital options more in place of cash transactions.

The new rules dictate that customers will have to pay ₹23 per ATM cash withdrawal after the free monthly transactions have been used up. From now on, this change seems to send a hurtful fee increase for a transaction that used to attract only ₹21. Free transactions will still continue for customers, with five transactions being permitted each month from their bank ATMs and another three from the ATMs of other banks in metropolitan cities and five in non-metro cities.
